A luminescent solar concentrator may comprise of a glass or a plastic plate that is painted or coated with dyes or luminophores which takes the light from the sun but will have to transport it and emitted through a longer wavelength. It is guided to move towards the solar power cells. Though this idea is nothing new, it is only now that experts have developed and improved its effectiveness and efficiency in transforming light into a usable form of energy that people need.
Light is absorbed by the dyes as it comes in contact with the glass or plastic. The electrons become more active and when energy level goes down, they are released into the carrier sheet and find their way to the solar cells where they are converted into energy in the form of electricity. This type of solar concentrator is far more convenient because there are no movable parts like tracker that need to follow the sun through the use of mirror installations. Through solar concentrator technology, this concept has been developed further for better efficiency minus the cost. If it will be made available to the public, a luminescent solar concentrator will definitely increase power efficiency at the same time it may reduce cost considerably.
There is a setback though for this newly developed method of converting sunlight into electricity. With the prototype lasting about three months only, the length of time that these solar windows lasts may hinder its effective use in the end. Nonetheless, people will have to wait and see while experts explore other options to make it last longer to really be of effective use. Luminescent solar concentrators still have a long way to go but at least, private individuals and businesses have something to look forward to. Meanwhile, people may still rely on the solar panels on their roofs for energy especially during summer time.
