Planning for Camera Surveillance Systems

Whether you live in a small apartment building or a sprawling mansion, there are at least a dozen camera surveillance systems that are just perfect for your situation.  The choices are really endless.  In this article we will discuss a few of the planning options that are available to you.  When shopping for a camera surveillance system, it pays to do a little research first to whittle down the choices and to make a decision that fits well with your budgets and goals for the project.

The very first thing to do is to write down why you want a camera security system to begin with.  Common reasons are to protect family and property.  Get a little more detailed than that though.  Statements like, “I just have a funny feeling about the gardener. He might be stealing some tools from us and I want to make sure that the tools are protected,” are a lot more helpful in refining system requirements than I want to protect my property.  Once the motivations for getting a new security system are in writing, next determine your budget for the project.

Some people have started off with under a hundred dollars.  That is OK.  With the level of technology today, you can get a starter system for under a hundred.  So, do not think that you need hundreds of dollars to install a good camera surveillance system.  If you have a couple of grand to sink into the system, fine.  But, a huge budget is not an absolute requirement.   Next, look at the areas that you want protected and think about camera placement.  You will not need many cameras.  An outdoor security camera fitted with a panning motion arm has tremendous capabilities.  At this point just think about what kind of recording capabilities you want.

At the end of all this, you should have a pretty good plan in place, detailing the overall goals of the system, areas of coverage, camera requirements, budget and recording capability requirements.
