Below you will see an abrupt list of coats, ranked by their ability to keep you toasty or cool. All of them listed have their own places on the ever-changing temperature timeline that is the time of year. Some will keep you warm, and some will keep you dry, but no matter what they all have potential for being the best type of coat.
The Anorak
Known as the anorak in the UK areas, it goes by other names too like arctic jacket and the parka. It is designed to be worn in cold climates where winds can be harsh and unforgiving. It is often accompanied by an inner lining made of fur to truly fight the cold weather and keep you warm. On the outer layer of the jacket you can usually find a waterproof fabric, perfect handling rainy and snowy weather. Many different types of anoraks exist and go by names such as the fishtail and snorkel parkas, each sporting their own look.
Duffle Jacket
The town of Duffel is where this coat was first conceived. It gets recognition as a good warm weather coat because of the cloth it is made out of, a coarse, heavy wool known as Duffel cloth. That is how it got its name. It was originally made for the British Navy to accompany their uniforms in WWI. It was modified a tiny bit and was widely used in WWII also. Today it is a nice fashion choice and holds distinction because of its “walrus teeth” fasteners in the front, tied together with leather straps.
Pea Jacket or Pea Coat
This coat is a classic and can definitely be added to the list of warm winter coats. Everyone knows the style of pea coat, navy blue if vintage, and very minimalistic in appearance. It keeps the wearer wrapped up tight and warm because of the front being double-breasted and made of wool, creating a cozy wrap around the body. They also come in leather, fur, and other fabrics.
Classic Trench Coat
We are now climbing over the fence that divides cold weather coats from cool weather coats. The classic trench coat is a glorified raincoat, but rightfully so. It is knee-length and made to be waterproof and durable, so they keep you dry, and they last a long time. They also normally come with a removable inner lining for ease, not to mention give to wearer a look of respect.
Swing Coats
Swing coats, or swing jackets, are great choices for cool spring coats for women. They were originally made in the late 1940s as maternity clothing, but boy have they evolved. Still a great choice for pregnant women, the newer models of swing coats are great for any woman. Vintage styles go down to the knees, while modern styles are more fit and stop around the waist. They are known to complement women’s shapes very well.
In Other Words…
Cold Weather coats like the parka should really only be often used in cold weather, or else it will just be too hot. Apparel like swing coats and trenchcoats are better for rainy days and less harsh times of the season. Decide for yourself what is best otherwise.
