If you have kids who love playing basketball, or if it happens that you are trying to coach a youth basketball team, they will, without a doubt, enjoy learning as well as playing the wonderful drills below listed. All of these are fast and easy basketball youth drills.
“Quick – Get Low” – Position the kids in the center of the court. The kids can mimic your movements like jogging in place, hopping, etc. When you shout “quick”, the kids should get in a defense position. But, when you say “get low”, they can carry on doing whatever it is they were doing beforehand. Kids who make mistakes are out of the game.
Green/Red Light – This basketball drill for kids begins with all players positioned at the base of the court and each one holding a basketball. When you shout “green light”, they should begin to dribble and run. When you say “red light”, they stop. Now, there is a variation to this drill that you can also do. Here is how it works. Have the kids start at the baseline, with each kid holding a ball. When you say “green light”, they dribble forward. When you shout “yellow light”, they should dribble right and if you say “blue light” they should go left. Shout “red light” and they all should stop completely. The kids must dribble the ball throughout the entire drill.
Speed Dribbling – Players should begin at the center of the court, with each player holding a basketball. The objective here is to reduce the amount of dribbles that they do. Allow the players to go from the center of the court to the half court end and have them count how many dribbles they made all in all. Ask them to cover the exact same distance and have them reduce their dribbles by one. Repeat and again reduce the dribbles by one. Continue reducing up until you increase their speed.
Quick – Alert Direction Change – Have three to four kids stand at the center court line, a few feet away from one another and facing you (you will be standing on the foul line or the middle of the half court). Now, instruct your players to move in either direction that you move while dribbling. Go backwards and forwards, and side to side. Change directions without saying anything, so they would need to keep a close watch on you in order for them to be able to follow your movements. As they go and progress, move faster and more quickly!
